Bayer Leverkusen Reaches Europa League Final in Dramatic Style

May 10, 2024Author: Klind Parangoni

Bayer Leverkusen secured a dramatic last-gasp victory against AS Roma on Thursday night, reaching the Europa League final and keeping their incredible unbeaten run alive.

The rollercoaster match saw Leverkusen come from behind twice, eventually drawing 2-2 and progressing 4-2 on aggregate. Substitute Josip Stanišić became the unlikely hero, scoring a stoppage-time equalizer to send the BayArena crowd into raptures.

Unbeaten Run Extends

This result extends Leverkusen's remarkable unbeaten streak to a staggering 49 matches across all competitions. Manager Xabi Alonso's side has already secured the Bundesliga title and is in the German Cup final, putting them on course for a historic treble.

Late Drama Seals the Deal

The match itself was a tense affair. Roma, needing to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg, took the lead through a controversial penalty converted by Leandro Paredes. Leverkusen fought back, but another penalty for Roma, again slotted home by Paredes, seemed to have ended their hopes.

However, with the clock ticking down, a stroke of luck saw a corner deflect off Roma defender Gianluca Mancini and into the net. With the momentum firmly in their favor, Leverkusen pushed for a winner and Stanišić's late strike sealed a dramatic victory.

Bayer Leverkusen set for Europa League Final

This victory sets up a mouthwatering final against another Italian side, Atalanta, who comfortably dispatched Marseille. The final will be played on May 22nd in Dublin.

Can Leverkusen continue their dream season and lift the Europa League trophy? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: this team is not to be underestimated.
