Feyenoord vs Roma Europa League Preview

Feb 14, 2024Author: Klei Hoxha

The stage is set for a thrilling encounter as Feyenoord vs Roma face each other in the first leg of their Europa League knockout round playoffs on Thursday. De Kuip will be rocking as the Dutch giants, fresh off a nine-game unbeaten run, look to overcome the challenge of Serie A giants Roma.

Their Performance

Despite dropping from the Champions League after finishing third in their group, Feyenoord haven't missed a beat. They've been dominant at home, winning five of their last seven matches and keeping four clean sheets on the trot. This bodes well for their chances of securing a positive result in the first leg.

The Rotterdam outfit is riding a wave of confidence, claiming three consecutive victories, including a 2-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam in their last outing. Defenders Dávid Hancko and Lutsharel Geertruida were the heroes, scoring second-half goals to seal the win.

Feyenoord will have to navigate some absences, with Quinten Timber (concussion) and top scorer Santiago Gimenez (calf injury) doubtful. Captain Gernot Trauner is also ruled out.

On the other hand, Roma arrive in Rotterdam seeking to bounce back from a disappointing 4-2 home defeat to Inter Milan in Serie A. Despite the setback, they've been scoring freely, finding the net at least twice in their last four games.

Under new manager Daniele De Rossi, Roma will strive to shake off the Inter loss and prove their credentials in their first European game under his leadership. Chris Smalling is expected to return, while Bryan Cristante misses out with a back injury.

What Do We Expect From This Feyenoord vs Roma Match

Historically, Feyenoord vs Roma hasn't been the most even matchup. Roma boast three wins in their five encounters, including a 1-0 victory in the 2022 Europa Conference League final. However, Feyenoord emerged victorious in their last Europa League meeting, a 1-0 win in the quarterfinals last season.

Both teams have their strengths and weaknesses, but considering Feyenoord's home advantage and their impressive form in 2024, we predict a narrow win for the Dutch side. Expect a close-fought encounter with De Kuip buzzing with anticipation.
