Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has been officially suspended for two La Liga matches by the Spanish Football Association. The decision comes after Bellingham received a red card during the recent Valencia-Real Madrid game on 2 march 2024.
The official statement released by La Liga cites "attitudes of contempt or inconsideration towards the referees or authorities" as the reason for the suspension. This aligns with reports suggesting that Bellingham used strong language towards referee Jesus Gil Manzano after a controversial late-game decision.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti commented on the situation, stating that "Bellingham told Gil Manzano the sentence 'it's a f*king goal' and he did not insult him." Ancelotti appears to be arguing that while Bellingham's words were heated, they did not constitute an insult towards the referee.
Bellingham will miss Real Madrid's upcoming La Liga matches against Celta Vigo and Osasuna.
This suspension comes at a crucial time for Real Madrid, as they are currently in a tight race for the La Liga title. Bellingham's absence will be a significant blow to the team's midfield, as he is a vital player for both their attacking and defensive play.
It remains to be seen if Real Madrid will appeal the suspension. Bellingham will be available for selection again following the completion of his two-match ban.
