Rory McIlroy found out about the jaw-dropping merger between LIV Golf and the PGA on social media - soon after rejecting a $300million offer.

The Northern Irishman has been one of the leading voices against the Saudi Arabian backed Tour. McIlroy even made his feelings towards the controversial tour crystal clear when he rejected a jaw-dropping $300m (£241m) offer to breakaway from the PGA tour and join LIV.

However, he now finds himself in an invidious position, as the PGA stunned the sporting world by agreeing a deal to merge with LIV, which has been accused of being a vehicle for “sportswashing”. To make matters even worse, the deal was not even communicated to McIlroy, who reportedly came across the news on social media.

PGA star Sahith Theegala recently claimed the PGA’s top stars like McIlroy were not properly informed about the news. The Californian native took to Twitter to state the PGA stars found out about the news by flicking through their social media channels.

“Just craziness, I mean I’m sure there’s a reason for it but it’s not going to be a good enough reason for the utter lack of communication,” he said on social media.

“I mean, how are top 10 players in the world finding out on Twitter? But I’m biting my tongue til there’s more stuff we hear.

“No way players are going to be okay with this.” When announcing the merger, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan stated it would bring an end to “disruption and distraction” caused by numerous legal battles and litigation, including an anti-trust lawsuit filed against the PGA Tour by 11 golfers last August.

“After two years of disruption and distraction, this is a historic day for the game we all know and love,” Monahan said.

“This transformational partnership recognises the immeasurable strength of the PGA Tour’s history, legacy and pro-competitive model and combines with it the DP World Tour and LIV — including the team golf concept — to create an organisation that will benefit golf’s players, commercial and charitable partners and fans.”
