Shane Lowry entered the Arnold Palmer Invitational with contrasting emotions. While his recent form was strong, evidenced by a share of the 54-hole lead at the Cognizant Classic, his record at Bay Hill was abysmal.
Lowry overcame his historical struggles at the course, carding a scorching 6-under 66 for a one-shot lead after the opening round. This marked the first time in Lowry's six appearances at the tournament that he broke 70. Last year, he only just made the cut, finishing tied for 67th.
Lowry's round was a display of resilience and clutch putting. He drained three birdie putts from beyond 20 feet and chipped in for eagle on the 12th hole. Despite his past struggles, Shane Lowry managed to avoid most of the trouble Bay Hill is notorious for.
“It’s horrific,” Lowry said with a laugh, acknowledging his past performances. However, his strong play this week speaks volumes.
Shane Lowry secured a sponsor exemption to participate in the prestigious event, a stark contrast to his past difficulties at Bay Hill. While the course has historically presented challenges for Lowry, his opening round suggests a newfound confidence.
“It’s one of these places where some people love it,” Lowry said. “I’ve struggled with it over the years… Maybe that’s the kind of score I need to shoot around here to just give myself the confidence to go out and play my game.”
Shane Lowry wasn't alone in facing adversity. Hideki Matsuyama, fresh off a victory at Riviera, withdrew from the pro-am due to back pain. Despite the setback, Matsuyama bounced back with a solid 67, including a chip-in for eagle.
The field at Bay Hill is stacked with talent. Justin Lower also carded a 67, while players like Russell Henley, Sam Burns, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Brian Harman are all within striking distance.
Lowry's impressive opening round sets the stage for an exciting tournament. With the course expected to firm up over the weekend, maintaining his composure will be crucial. However, Lowry's strong start is a positive sign, and he'll look to build on his momentum as the tournament progresses.
