The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is in turmoil following the issuance of an arrest warrant for its former president, Luis Rubiales, by the Public Prosecutor's Office. Rubiales, currently outside Spain, faces allegations of irregularities during his tenure at the helm of the Spanish Football Federation.

Rubiales Faces Arrest Warrant in Spanish Football Federation Investigation

The investigation, initiated in June 2022 by Majadahonda's Court of Instruction number 4, centers on the RFEF's decision to host the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. This probe, focusing on suspected corruption, mismanagement, and money laundering over the past five years, led to a raid on the RFEF's headquarters and the arrest of seven individuals on Thursday. The investigation also encompasses actions at La Cartuja stadium in Seville and residences in Granada and Torrox (Málaga). Notably, Rubiales' home in Granada was among the locations searched.

Rubiales, yet to make a direct public statement, reportedly expressed surprise through a conversation with journalist Isabel Rabago, host of Telecinco's 'Vamos a ver'. According to Rabago, Rubiales emphasized his continuous work presence in the Dominican Republic for over a month, with his family planning to join him for Easter. Rabago further clarified that Rubiales' stay in the Dominican Republic is unrelated to avoiding legal action, asserting, "He has been in the Dominican Republic for work purposes, continuously for a month."

RFEF Pledges Transparency as Investigation Continues

The RFEF, in a released statement, pledged full cooperation with law enforcement and judicial authorities following the search of its offices. The federation reiterated its commitment to absolute transparency and expressed its belief in a thorough and exhaustive investigation to uncover all aspects of the case.

This arrest warrant and ongoing investigation cast a dark shadow over the RFEF. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how these allegations of corruption and financial misconduct will impact the future of Spanish football's governing body.
