Red Bull Optimistic About Sergio Perez Contract Extension for 2025

Helmut Marko, Red Bull's chief advisor and past critic of Perez, has expressed optimism about the Mexican driver's future. In a recent interview with Austrian publication Kleine Zeitung, Marko acknowledged Perez's dedication and improvement, highlighting his ability to learn from past stumbles. He particularly praised Perez's ability to match his car setup with that of teammate Max Verstappen, a key factor in his recent strong performances.

"It's clear that 'Checo' is having his best season since he's been with us," Marko told Kleine Zeitung. "If he maintains this performance, as he did in qualifying in Japan, then he will surely be the best option for Red Bull in 2025 with a Sergio Perez contract extension."

Prioritizing Continuity with a Contract Extension

While acknowledging the appeal of signing another top-tier driver like Carlos Sainz, Marko also addressed the challenges. Sainz, reportedly leaving Ferrari by the end of 2024, has received a lucrative offer from Audi that Red Bull might struggle to match. With limited options for available seats in 2025, Marko indicated Red Bull is prioritizing retaining Perez, who is demonstrably performing at his peak. This focus on continuity reflects the competitive landscape of Formula One, especially with Audi's entry into the sport in 2026 following their acquisition of the Sauber team.

While acknowledging Sainz's disappointment when Red Bull promoted Verstappen ahead of him during their time at Toro Rosso, Marko emphasized the team's commitment to nurturing talent and securing the strongest possible driver lineup for the future. However, with Perez exceeding expectations this season, a Sergio Perez contract extension seems increasingly likely.
