The Washington Commanders secured a key addition to their offense by signing veteran tight end Zach Ertz to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million. This move marks Ertz's return to the NFC East after spending the majority of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Zach Ertz Lands in Washington

Ertz, entering his 12th season in the NFL, previously harbored ambitions of contributing to a Super Bowl run with the Detroit Lions. He joined their practice squad in January with that goal in mind. "The plan was initially...to have a legitimate role in the Super Bowl," Ertz revealed on the Pat McAfee Show. However, his stint with the Lions was short-lived.

Now, in Washington, Zach Ertz finds himself in familiar territory. Reuniting with former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who serves as the Commanders' offensive coordinator, provides a significant comfort level. Their successful collaboration in Arizona bodes well for Zach Ertz and his integration into the Washington offense.

Ertz's arrival addresses a need for the Commanders following the departure of Logan Thomas. He brings a wealth of experience and playmaking ability to a tight end group that already boasts John Bates' excellent blocking skills and Cole Turner's receiving prowess. This trio has the potential to significantly elevate the Commanders' offensive capabilities.

Experience Meets Opportunity

While recent injuries and a slight dip in production raise some questions, Ertz's signing injects optimism into Washington's offensive outlook. With ample salary cap space and limited options remaining in the draft and free agency, a return to Pro Bowl form for Zach Ertz could be instrumental in propelling the Commanders towards success this season.
